Duo Massecar • d’Orion
Active as a collective since 2015, the duo formed by Catherine Lalonde Massecar and Érick d’Orion explores a creative approach that values the integration of audio, spoken word (fictional or documentary), home video, maneuver, installation, live art, stealth action and/or the spectacular. The duo attempt to define Opera-maneuvering as an artistic practice in its own right.

Érick d’Orion is an interdisciplinary audio artist since 1995. Focusing his audio research on maximalism, his work is closely related to noise, musique concrète, free jazz and electroacoustic music. He also designs sound environments and music for film, theater and other interdisciplinary projects. His work has been presented in concert in Canada, Europe, Australia, Cuba, Mexico, Haiti and the United States, and broadcast throughout the world. His discography includes over forty studio and concert albums. Since 2010, he has curated the Sound Installations program at the Festival International de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville.

Catherine Lalonde Massecar has been working in the field of interdisciplinary arts for some fifteen years, as an artist-researcher and instigator of projects involving material and immaterial forms in the very real world. Her proposals oscillate between collaborative artist/community creations in Montreal’s Centre-Sud district (where she founded Péristyle Nomade) and experimental and infiltration projects in multiform venues (solo and with Duo Massecar • d’Orion). She holds a master’s degree in theater from UQAM, with a thesis on artistic infiltration and the fragmentation of dramaturgy in urban territory (2011). She is currently completing a doctorate in art studies and practice (2024), focusing on the Opera-maneuvering to explore the paradoxical and unpredictable encounter between artistic maneuvering and the concept of opera, in order to amplify the relationship to the world.

The Duo Massecar • d’Orion offers a multidisciplinary performance of sound, speech and text projection, based on French composer Pierre Henry’s favorite work, L’Apocalypse de Jean. Originally, this work can be understood as a manifesto, a defense of the powers of musique concrète and audio art, capable of arousing inner visions and pictorial representations in the listener. The duo propose a personal, performative re-reading of certain passages in the piece. The performance, Fragments de l’Apocalypse de Jean selon Pierre Henry, will be accompanied by projections by Simon Dumas (Productions Rhizome) and texts by David Turgeon.

In autumn 1968, Pierre Henry premiered L’Apocalypse de Jean, opening a twenty-six-hour concert devoted to his already prolific oeuvre, in a room where spectators could wander at will, or even lie on a mattress to listen better. In this simple, casual setting – anything but solemn – we obviously recognize a revolutionary gesture of every era, that of fraternal welcome: it’s the gesture of small parties and small churches. And its standard-bearer is nothing less than the clear, martial images of the New Testament’s Apocalypse.

Excerpt from Sur une musique révolutionnaire (2024).
Text commissioned from David Turgeon.
