Sunday, November 2nd, 3 pm.
During this concert, the musicians will perform works by two great 20th-century composers, Dmitri Shostakovich and R. Murray Schafer, as well as works by Quebec composers Denis Dion and Michel Gonneville.
The Quartet will open the concert with a work written in tribute to Guido Molinari and his studio, Coin Darling by Denis Dion, which showcases the colors and hues so dear to Guido Molinari. You will then hear R. Murray Schafer’s Quartet No.1 (1970), a fiery and energetic work that was composed in less than two months by the young Schafer, then aged 37.
Following the death on September 3 of the great sociologist and builder of modern Quebec, Guy Rocher, composer Michel Gonneville wrote C(h)oeur en expansion for string quartet in his honour, using the letters of his name. The Molinari Quartet will premiere the work. To conclude the concert, the musicians will perform Dimitri Shostakovich’s 12th Quartet, dedicated to violinist Dmitri Tzyganov, who premiered it with the other members of the Beethoven Quartet. This opus is a harsh and serious work, with dark sounds and strange atmospheres.
Program:
Denis Dion: Coin Darling (premiere)
Murray Schafer: Quartet No.1
Michel Gonneville : C(h)oeur en expansion (creation)
Dmitri Shostakovich: Quartet No.12
Tickets are sold at the door, on the day of the event, for 20 $.
