Curators: ART\/AROUND in collaboration with Georgiana Uhlyarik<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inspired by conversations with quantum physicist Shohini Ghose, the title of this exhibition connects Jinny Yu\u2019s latest exploration into painting, abstraction, and the complexities of belonging with the concept of superposition, hypothesising co-existence in multiple states. This principle resonates with the dynamic relationship she explores in her work between guest and host, challenging fixed states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yu studied with some of the most reputable artists at Concordia University, including Guido Molinari, whose teaching informed her sensibilities, formal explorations, and modes of production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now an internationally renowned artist, Yu presents an exhibition at FGM that brings together key works from the past decade of her practice. Among them is her latest series, Inextricably Ours<\/em> (2022-ongoing), recently featured in her solo exhibition At Once<\/em>, at the Art Gallery of Ontario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Staring at her paintings of multi-stable cuboids, we find our gaze flipping back and forth between receding and protruding forms, in a cerebral play of perceptual reversal. Coalescing as one and<\/em> many at the same time, these images become powerful visual metaphors for her inquiry into existence and alternative ways of perceiving. They are a visible expression of her ongoing exploration of the complexities of belonging.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The works selected reflect Yu\u2019s contribution to the contemporary history of abstraction as an ethical, transcultural, and political form, opening portals through which we can engage with uncertainty and<\/em> glimpse the possibility of a new gestalt.<\/p>\n\n\n
