On this special occasion, we are delighted to welcome poet Nicole Brossard, who will read a selection of poems by Fernande Saint-Martin (1927-2019). The texts will be taken from the publications La fiction du r\u00e9el. Po\u00e8mes 1953-1975<\/em> and Maroufl\u00e9e la langue<\/em>, previously unpublished works that will be presented for a rare public presentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fernande Saint-Martin (1927-2019)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Essayist, art theorist and semiologist Fernande Saint-Martin has researched the foundations of verbal and visual modes of representation, as well as the conditions of their production and communication. Concurrently with her intensive involvement in mass journalism, at La Presse and Ch\u00e2telaine magazine, and in the diffusion of contemporary art, as director of the Mus\u00e9e d’art contemporain de Montr\u00e9al, she published, in addition to hundreds of articles on poetry criticism, literary criticism and art criticism, several basic works in these different sectors. Her work during her time teaching at the Universit\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al focused on the semiology and semantics of visual language. In 2020, the Guido Molinari Foundation held an evening in tribute to this great woman of letters, whose poetry remains little-known to this day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nicole Brossard<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Montreal-born poet, novelist and essayist. Since 1965, Nicole Brossard has published over forty books, including Le d\u00e9sert mauve<\/em>, Mus\u00e9e de l’os et de l’eau<\/em>, Ardeur<\/em> and La lettre a\u00e9rienne<\/em>, most of which have been translated into several languages. Her writings have influenced an entire generation. She is also co-founder of the literary magazine La Barre du Jour<\/em>, the feminist journal Les T\u00eates de Pioche<\/em>, co-author of the Anthologie de la po\u00e9sie des femmes au Qu\u00e9bec <\/em>and co-director of the film Some American Feminists<\/em>. She was a member of the collective behind the play La nef des sorci\u00e8res<\/em> and initiated the collective behind La th\u00e9orie, un dimanche<\/em>. Winner of several literary awards, including the Governor General’s Award (1974, 1984), the Athanase-David Award (1991), the Canada Council Molson Prize (2007), the Prix international de litt\u00e9rature fran\u00e7aise Benjamin Fondane (2013), the Prix Violet de Metropolis bleu (2018), as well as the Prix Griffin 2019, Prix Gilles-Corbeil 2022 and the Grand Prix de po\u00e9sie de la Maison de Po\u00e9sie 2023 for Temps r\u00e9el du po\u00e8me<\/em> and her body of work. She has been a member of the Acad\u00e9mie des Lettres du Qu\u00e9bec since 1991, an Officer of the Order of Canada, a Knight of the Ordre national du Qu\u00e9bec and a Companion of the Ordre des arts et des lettres du Qu\u00e9bec.
